The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet®) is an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (“PCORI”). It comprises a community of patients and their families, researchers, scientists, clinicians, health systems, and other committed individuals and organizations dedicated to patient-centered outcomes research.
PCORnet® is a large, highly representative, national patient-centered clinical research network comprising large Clinical Data Research Networks (CDRNs). A CDRN is made up of different health systems and other data partners. The University of Utah participates in the Greater Plains Collaborative CDRN or GPC

General PCORnet® Process
Front Door: If you want to tap
PCORnetPCORnet® to answer a research question, you will submit your question to
PCORnetPCORnet® via the Front Door. Front Door is the
entry way into PCORnet'sentryway into the PCORnet® Coordinating Center, a network of partners who collaborate to lead
PCORnet'sPCORnet® operations and data activities and maintain its infrastructure.
The Coordinating Center: Begin working with the requestor to
make sureensure they know
specificallywhat information is sought. Then they convert the question to a
queryPhrasequery phrase, a query with an underlying executable code, and
sendssend it
tosecurely to
PCORnetPCORnet® network partners.
- PCORnet
PCORnet® Network Partners: Runs the query against their database and
sendreturns the result
backto the Coordinating
centerCenter.
Accessing
PCORnetPCORnet® Data: The researcher gets results back via Front Door. The entire process is performed locally at
PCORnetPCORnet® partner networks– the data never moves and remains secure in
PCORnetPCORnet® Coordinating Center.
