Public Survey

NOTE: A public survey link can only be utilized if the first instrument in your project is enabled as a survey

  • Public Survey link is only valid for the first survey in your project, all proceeding surveys must be specifically enabled with a trigger mechanism to be distributed. There are many mechanisms in REDCap to accomplish this, see: Surveys Setup & Distribution Overview

Initial Considerations:

Using a public survey link is the simplest and fastest way to collect responses for your survey.  Responses will be collected anonymously (unless the survey contains questions asking for identifying data from the participant).

NOTE: Since this method uses a single survey link for all participants, it allows for the possibility of participants taking the survey multiple times, which may be necessary in some cases.

How to enable & test public survey:

  1. Enable the first instrument to be a survey: Enable Survey

  2. Click on "Survey Distribution Tools" in left side bar

  3. Click "Public Survey Link" as shown below

    1. Remember to protect your survey link from spam using reCAPTCHA feature: https://utahctsi.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/3/article/1489960979?src=-1467441494

  4. Click “Open public survey'

  5. TEST:

    • Enter and Submit test data into the survey to verify that it's working and formatted correctly

    •  It is very simple to make any changes and edit your project in Development Mode, however, once a project is in Production Mode it is very difficult to make changes

    • When the project is approved for production, fake data will automatically be erased

    • Real data collection is not permitted until your REDCap project has been approved for Production by a REDCap Administrator: Moving a Project to Production

  6. As needed, ensure survey settings & survey distribution mechanism(s) are configured and working:

Additional Considerations

  • We do not recommend you distribute any monetary compensation (e.g. gift cards) via public survey link, which could prompt fraudulent responses.

  • REDCap does not record the IP address of survey respondents. If you have an unusual number of responses, we cannot identify if you have bots completing your public survey.

  • Adding an optional participant identifier is a great way to later identify respondents for: monetary compensation, follow-up surveys, or verification of appropriateness as a responder.
