Copy Project, Forms or Instruments

This article reviews the below topics:

  • Copy existing Instrument

    • Use this method if you want to copy a single instrument to different project

  • Copy an existing form

    • Use this method if you want to copy a single data entry form to a different project

  • Request to Copy a project

    • Use this method to make a copy of the entire project


To copy & upload an existing instrument, do the following:

  1. In the project which hosts the instrument you wish to copy, navigate to “Online Designer”

  2. In the “Data collection Instruments” box, click on “Choose Action”, select “Download instrument ZIP”

     

  3. The ZIP file will then downloaded and saved on your computer (generally saved in Downloads)

    1. NOTE: You may need to compress the file on your desktop prior to uploading

  4. Next, go to the “Online Designer” within the project you wish to upload the instrument TO

  5. Click “Upload” at the top of the “Data Collection Instruments” page (note: project needs to be in development mode or draft mode to do this)

     

  6. Click “Browse” and find and open the ZIP file you just saved.  After it's been selected, click on "Upload instrument ZIP" in the box on REDCap


To copy & upload an existing form, do the following:

  1. In the project which hosts the instrument you wish to copy, navigate to “Project Setup”

  2. Click “Data Dictionary”

  3. Click "Download the current Data Dictionary" 

  4. Copy all the rows that contain the fields from the form you want to add (to your other project). 

  5. Next, Download the data dictionary from the project you wish to add this form to. 

    1. Scroll to the bottom and click on the first empty box (Outlined in black box in the picture below). 

      1. Now paste the copied fields here.

  6. Save the excel data dictionary file that you added the new fields to.

  7. Now go back to REDCap and select the project you want to add the copied form to

  8. Go to "Project Setup" and click on "upload data dictionary" (like we did on step 1)

  9. Scroll to the bottom, click browse, and select the file you saved your new data dictionary in.  (to do this, your project needs to be in draft mode)

  10. Click "Upload File," and approve the upload.  The new form will now be added to your project.


To Request to Copy a project, do the following:

  1. Go to "Project Home" within the project you wish to copy

  2. Click "Other Functionality"

  3. Click "Copy this project"

  4. Next a page will show up about making a copy (looks similar box shown in image below).  Change the Project Title and any other necessary changes. 

  5. Next click "Request Copy".  The REDCap Support team will then review and contact you to proceed.
