Branching Logic: is employed when fields on a REDCap project need to be hidden during certain circumstances (in other words, it makes a field visible ONLY when the values of other fields meet certain conditions). For instance, it can be used to hide fields related to pregnancy if the subject in the database is male.  The instructions below show how to apply branching logic to a question on your project using the online designer. (Note: Branching logic can also be applied on the data dictionary).

Note: Branching logic is applied to the question you would like to be hidden

1.  Go to page that you want to add branching logic to

2.  Select the green arrow on question you want to apply branching logic to (circled in red below).

3.  A box similar to the one shown below will now pop up.  Here you choose the answer you'd like a participant to select to a previous question enable for the current question to appear on the form/survey.

4.  Now in the “Field choices from other fields” box, select the field(s) the logic is based on, and drag and drop it/ them into the “Show the field ONLY if…” box.  You then may need to define what the answer should be enable for it to appear on the instrument.  Doing all of this assigns the question to be hidden until the logic in the "Show the field ONLY if..." comes true. For example, in this box if you selected that state=Utah, the question would only appear on the instrument when Utah was selected on the "state" question.

A picture of where you select the question (circled in red), then drag and drop it (where arrow points) is shown here:

5.  Click Save.  The Branching Logic should now be programmed to work for that question.
