The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet®) is an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (“PCORI”). It comprises a community of patients and their families, researchers, scientists, clinicians, health systems, and other committed individuals and organizations dedicated to patient-centered outcomes research.
PCORnet® is a large, highly representative, national patient-centered clinical research network comprising large Clinical Data Research Networks (CDRNs). A CDRN is made up of different health systems and other data partners. The University of Utah participates in the Greater Plains Collaborative CDRN or GPC
GREATER PLAINS COLLABORATIVE
The Greater Plains Collaborative (GPC) is a PCORnet® Clinical Data Research Network, it consists of 13 leading medical centers in 9 states committed to a shared vision of improving healthcare delivery through ongoing learning, adoption of evidence-based practices, and active research dissemination. The University of Utah is part of GPC.

How it All Works
Questions for PCORnet® start at the Front Door. The Front Door is a central gateway point for anyone seeking to use PCORnet® infrastructure and collaborate on patient-centered research. Once users have reached out, the PCORnet® Coordinating Center sets up a consultation to clarify the request and convert the question into a query to send to the Network Partners for the best fit.

General PCORnet® Process
Front Door: If you want to tap PCORnet® to answer a research question, you will submit your question to PCORnet® via the Front Door. Front Door is the entryway into the PCORnet® Coordinating Center, a network of partners who collaborate to lead PCORnet® operations and data activities and maintain its infrastructure.
The Coordinating Center: Begin working with the requestor to ensure they know what information is sought. Then they convert the question to a query phrase, a query with an underlying executable code, and send it securely to PCORnet® network partners.
PCORnet® Network Partners: Runs the query against their database and returns the result to the Coordinating Center.
Accessing PCORnet® Data: The researcher gets results back via Front Door. The entire process is performed locally at PCORnet® partner networks– the data never moves and remains secure in PCORnet® Coordinating Center.
University of Utah-GPC Protocol
Investigator- Present ideas to the UofU PCORnet® team, and provide clarifications and additional documentation as needed.
UOFU PCORnet® team-Presents the idea to the Research Opportunity Assessment Committee at GPC via the FrontDoor and relays information and request for additional documentation.
Research Opportunity Assessment Committee-Reviews the idea from the investigator, and requests additional information and/or documentation. Passes it over to the GPC committee
GPC committee-Denies or approves the request.
